Omnitron in the News

Irvine, CA – June 17, 2008 Omnitron Systems Technology (www.omnitron-systems.com), a provider of fiber optic access systems for next-generation Carrier Ethernet networks, today announced compatibility with the Simple Network Management Protocol Version 3 (SNMPv3) for the iConverter® family of products.  SNMP is an interoperable standards-based protocol for network management, and SMNPv3 provides secure access to network devices by a combination of authenticating and encrypting packets over the network.

The iConverter family of MEF certified Network Interface Devices, managed media converters and CWDM Multiplexer/De-multiplexer products, provide carrier-grade fiber optic access in First-Mile FTTx broadband networks, Metropolitan Area Networks and Enterprise LANs. Support for SNMPv3 enhances the security of network management at the Customer Premises demarcation point.

”Security, authentication and encryption are important factors in the management of Carrier Ethernet Business Services”, said Doug Baar, Omnitron’s Vice-president of Engineering. “In a typical Carrier Ethernet network, the customer premises equipment is exposed, and can be used by an attacker to gain access to the network equipment. The consequence of an attack could be significant, as the intruder could snoop the management traffic, mimic it (spoofing) and take over the equipment and infrastructure.”

As business and commercial applications continue to place an increasing reliance on the telecom network infrastructure every day, it is vital for service providers to protect their infrastructure assets. Omnitron’s implementation of SNMPv3 provides this protection by adding an additional layer of intelligence to its managed devices, thereby preventing attackers from gaining access and affecting the network’s infrastructure, configuration and operation. SNMPv3 provides this with several important security features:

  • Message integrity to ensure that a packet has not been tampered with while in transit.
  • Authentication to verify that the message is from a valid source.
  • Encryption of packets to prevent snooping by an unauthorized source.

Other iConverter security features for network management include 802.3ah OAM encrypted management, and IP-less management, which eliminates the need for an IP address at the demarcation device.
