The new miConverter Gx enables inexpensive Gigabit fiber optic connectivity in Enterprise and Service Provider networks.

Gigabit Miniature Media Converter

Irvine, CA—November 7, 2005 -- Omnitron Systems Technology, Inc., the premier manufacturer of fiber access solutions for Enterprise LAN and First Mile Metropolitan Area Network applications, introduces the miConverter Gx™ miniature Gigabit media converter. The miConverter Gx provides cost-effective fiber connectivity from Gigabit switches to desktop and laptop computers, and is the first Gigabit media converter powered by a USB port.

The miConverter Gx delivers plug-and-play ease of use with Gigabit fiber auto-negotiation supporting connectivity found in many core fiber devices, and manual configuration to support legacy Gigabit fiber devices. The fiber port is available with SC connectors, and supports multimode and single-mode options. Single-fiber models feature bi-directional (BiDi) transceivers and support distances of up to 80km.

The miConverter Gx is powered by any PC, laptop or other device with a High-Powered (1.0, 1.1 and 2.0) USB port, eliminating the need for an electrical outlet. The miConverter Gx is also available with external US and International AC power supplies. The International model features optional interchangeable connectors for compatibility with the different electrical outlets found around the world.

The miConverter Gx overcomes the challenges of installing a fiber optic Network Interface Card (NIC) in a PC to provide Gigabit fiber-to-the-desktop connectivity. The miConverter Gx has a lower cost than a fiber NIC, does not require installation of software drivers, and functions independently of Operating Systems so it is compatible with all PCs and does not compete for CPU processing resources. The miConverter Gx delivers these same benefits when used with a laptop computer, and provides a more durable fiber connection than the protruding fiber port on a PCMCIA card.

The Gx is cost-effective, easy to install and links with a variety of gigabit devices, making it ideal for connecting large numbers of workstations in unmanaged fiber-to-the-desktop Gigabit Enterprise networks. These features are especially helpful in remote edge locations where power outlets are at a premium, such as portable, temporary facilities.

Weighing less than 6 oz. with the USB adapter cable, the miConverter Gx fits easily into any pocket or laptop carrying case and can be attached to portable equipment using the included Velcro® strips. This portability makes the miConverter Gx an excellent solution for military and construction site Gigabit fiber-to-the-laptop field applications where local power is not available. For field IT services, the miConverter Gx can also be used to connect portable UTP network test equipment at fiber network connections.
