Irvine, CA, January 23, 2001 –– Omnitron Systems Technology, Inc, a manufacturer of fiber media converter released today the FlexPoint™ Gx, a Gigabit fiber to copper converter for LAN and MAN applications. Compliant with the IEEE 802.3ab standard, the FlexPoint Gx supports distances of 100 meters of Gigabit over standard Category 5 wiring and up to 65 km over fiber.

Since different fiber distances require different power levels of the fiber-optic hardware the cost of the hardware varies with the required distance. The FlexPoint Gx’s availability with different power models provides the right model fit for each distance thus providing cost efficiency and flexibility to the user.
The FlexPoint Gx is available in multimode and single-mode models with SC or small form factor MT-RJ and LC connector types. In multimode, the FlexPoint Gx supports 850 nm (Sx) wavelength with distance of 220 meters, or 1300 nm (Lx) with distance of 550 meters when used with mode-conditioning cable. In single-mode, the FlexPoint Gx supports 1300 nm (Lx) with distances of 10 km and 25 km and 1550 nm with distance of 65 km.
The FlexPoint Gx features Auto-Negotiation facilitating auto sensing of half-duplex or full-duplex operation. This allows the FlexPoint Gx to adapt to the highest level of supported service of the device it is connected to and effectively provides 2 gigabit per seconds (Gbps) data rate when used in full-duplex. A manual override feature is provided to set the converter to the desired mode.
While supporting full wire speed, the FlexPoint Gx supports the IEEE 802.3 "Pause" command. This feature assists in controlling network congestion detected by a neighboring device. This feature can be disabled when a neighboring device does not support the "Pause" feature.
"Link Propagation" (sometimes referred to as "Link Loss Carry Forward"), or "Link Isolation" can be manually selected. Link Propagation assists in network management by propagating link status to the end device, typically a managed device which can report an alarm / fault to the network manager allowing traffic rerouting in the case of cable failure. Link Isolation is useful in installation and fault isolation when each device generates its own link and detects the availability or loss of its neighbor’s link.
The FlexPoint Gx can be used wall-mounted stand-alone, on a 5-unit rack-mounted shelf or in a 14-unit power-redundant Powered Chassis. It can be AC or 48VDC powered.

Available now, the FlexPoint Gx is priced at $995 for the Sx base model (4370), $1595 for the Lx 10 km model (4371), $1895 for the Lx 25 km model (4372) and $3695 for the 1550nm 65 km model (4373).
