iConverter™ fiber converters are ready for deployment by telco carriers.

Fiber Media Converter

Irvine, CA, January 24, 2003 – Omnitron Systems Technology, Inc., the premier manufacturer of fiber media converters for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, announced today that following months of rigorous testing it has achieved NEBS Level 3 certification for its iConverter managed media converter product line. The product line is now fully certified for deployment by telecommunication carriers.

The iConverter media converters provide copper to dual and single-fiber conversion for 10, 100, 10/100 and Gigabit Ethernet as well as T1 and E1. They also provide multimode to single-mode and dual fiber to single fiber conversion for Ethernet, T1, E1, OC-3 and OC-12 technologies.

Utilizing the iConverter configuration options, Telecommunication carrier, ISP, CLEC, ILEC, or IXC can optimize their network design. The 19-module 2-U (3.5 inch) high, triple-power-redundant managed chassis provides the most density in the smallest form factor for the data center or central office (CO) where reliability is critical and rack space is at a premium. The 2-module managed chassis provides the network’s edge or customer premise equipment (CPE) with a cost-effective managed connectivity solution. The 1-module unmanaged converter chassis provides connectivity where management is not required or when low cost is important.

AC and DC power options make the iConverter versatile for both customer premise and central office deployments. Its 19-module chassis with three hot-swappable triple-redundant power supplies can simultaneously use AC and DC power thus providing the ultimate in power, flexibility and reliability.

The iConverter products are in-band or out-of-band SNMP and Telnet managed through Omnitron's NetOutlook™ stand-alone network management software or through any standard SNMP software like HP OpenView™. The management feature enables the network administrator to remotely monitor and configure the iConverter units or diagnose technical problems while minimizing the number of costly remote service calls. The management agent generates traps to report special events such as module insertion or removal, link up or down, and power and temperature range violations.

The iConverter line also features remote diagnostic features that provide quick fault detection, isolation and reporting. An LED display on each module provides immediate visual status of each iConverter port. The diagnostic and management features of the iConverter products make them an easy-to-install, easy-to-manage and cost effective solution for deployment in any metropolitan or local area network.

About NEBS

Telecommunications service providers rely on NEBS certification to ensure the operating performance and safety of equipment deployed in their network facilities. NEBS Level 3 certification is defined by Telcordia (formerly Bellcore) and describes extensive physical performance criteria for Telco equipment. The certification process involves an extensive suite of tests designed to evaluate telecommunications network equipment in a variety of environmental conditions. Products are tested for performance in electromagnetic interference, surge protection, flammability, seismic, shock resistance, heat dissipation, and several other areas that ensure continued operation under extreme operating conditions.
