The new miConverter 10/100 enables inexpensive fiber optic connectivity in Enterprise and Service Provider networks.

Fiber Miniature Media Converter

Irvine, CA, May 3, 2005 -- Omnitron Systems Technology, Inc., the premier manufacturer of fiber connectivity solutions for Enterprise LAN and First Mile Metropolitan Area Network applications, introduces the miConverter 10/100™ miniature media converter for cost-effective fiber optic connectivity to a desktop or laptop computer.

Fiber optic technology provides a higher level of signal quality and security than copper UTP. A fiber optic network link is immune to EMI, RFI, cross-talk, ground loops and other electrical problems, greatly enhancing the signal quality in severe environments. Conversely, fiber optic links do not generate EMI or RFI signals that can lead to security breaches like copper UTP. These characteristics make fiber extremely attractive to government agencies with major security concerns.

The miConverter 10/100 is a rate-switching copper UTP-to-fiber media converter that provides fiber optic connectivity to desktop and laptop computers in Enterprise LANs.

The miConverter 10/100 delivers plug-and-play ease of use with a UTP port that auto-detects the speed, duplex mode and crossover function of the connected device. The miConverter 10/100 features store-and-forward technology that buffers the 100Mbps to 10Mbps data rate conversion and prevents dropping packets during heavy network traffic.

The fiber port is available with SC or ST connectors, and supports multimode (5km) and single-mode (120km) options. Single-fiber models feature bi-directional (BiDi) transceivers and support distances of up to 40km.

A USB adapter allows the miConverter 10/100 to be powered by a PC or Laptop USB port, eliminating the need for an electrical outlet. Weighing less than 5 oz. with the USB adapter, the miConverter 10/100 can easily fit into any pocket or laptop carrying case. The miConverter 10/100 is also available with external US and International AC power supplies. The International model features optional interchangeable connectors for compatibility with the different electrical outlets found around the world.

The miConverter was designed to overcome the challenges of providing fiber-to-the-desktop connectivity by installing a fiber optic Network Interface Card (NIC) in a PC. The miConverter 10/100 has a lower cost, does not require installation of software drivers, and functions independently of Operating Systems so it is compatible with all PCs and will not compete for processing resources. The miConverter 10/100 delivers these same benefits when used with a laptop computer, and provides a more rugged fiber connection than the ports on a PCMCI card that protrude out of the side of the laptop and can be easily damaged.

The miConverter 10/100 is ideal for connecting large numbers of workstations in unmanaged fiber-to-the-desktop Enterprise network applications. These applications can include remote edge locations where power outlets are at a premium, such as portable, temporary facilities that are often moved.

The miConverter 10/100 is also an excellent solution for military fiber-to-the-laptop applications where fiber connectivity is required and local power is not available. For portable IT service or military field deployments, the miConverter 10/100 can be attached to portable equipment with the included Velcro® strips, and is available with ruggedized metal ST fiber connectors.
