Omnitron in the News

The new iConverter® extends T3/E3 over fiber and supports advanced network management.

T3/E3 Fiber Media Converter Irvine, CA, May 3, 2004 –– Omnitron Systems Technology, Inc., the premier manufacturer of fiber media converters for First-Mile Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) and Enterprise LAN applications, announced today the iConverter T3/E3 fiber converter module as the newest addition to Omnitron’s iConverter product family. Targeting the needs of telecom ISPs, CLECs, ILECs and enterprise users that require Internet and voice access, the iConverter T3/E3 extends T3 (DS3) or E3 trunk distances over fiber up to 120 km and supports advanced network management for both the Central Office (CO) and Customer Premises (CPE).

The iConverter T3/E3 managed media converter is a member of the modular iConverter product family.

It provides standard T3 (44.736Mbps) or E3 (34.368Mbps) coax to fiber conversion and can be used by telco service providers and enterprise users to connect to devices such as PBX’s, multiplexers, routers and video servers via fiber. The iConverter T3/E3 operates in pairs extending distances over fiber, improving noise-immunity and quality of service while improving intrusion protection and network security.

The iConverter T3/E3 supports the ANSI, ITU and ETSI standards along with AMI, B3ZS and HDB3 line codes. iConverter T3/E3 models are available with multimode, single-mode, and single-fiber (single-mode) options. ST, SC, LC and MT-RJ fiber connector types are supported.

The iConverter T3/E3 features extensive local and remote loopback user-selectable diagnostic modes. Local loop-backs facilitate individual coax or fiber loopback operations. Remote loopback facilitates setting a remote T3/E3 converter to “Slave” loopback mode, in order to test the integrity of the fiber and the remote converter.

All iConverter modules are hot-swappable and can be mounted in a 19-Module or 5-Module rack-mountable chassis with any combination of redundant AC and DC power supplies, providing a scalable solution that is space efficient and cost effective. They can also be mounted in a 2-Module AC or DC powered chassis or in a 1-Module AC powered chassis. The iConverter modules feature two Ethernet backplane ports to provide connectivity to adjacent modules for network expansion and for In-Band Management, reducing per port cost while increasing network reliability.

Like all iConverter modules, the iConverter T3/E3 modules can be used as managed or unmanaged media converters. Management is achieved by adding a Network Management Module (NMM2) to the chassis. The NMM2 can be accessed via Telnet, via Omnitron’s NetOutlook™ SNMP-based management software or any SNMP-based software like HP’s OpenView™. The T3/E3 can be remotely configured and controlled using management. All of the module’s hardware dip-switch functions can be controlled via the software including protocol selection (T3/E3), line build-out options, port enable/disable control and all local and remote loopback and data patterns. The management feature enables the service provider to remotely configure or diagnose technical issues while minimizing the number of costly customer premises service calls. The diagnostic and management features of the iConverter make it an easy-to-install, easy-to-manage and cost effective solution for T3 or E3 over fiber deployment in any metropolitan or enterprise network.

Featuring NEBS Level 3 certification and supporting 10, 100, 10/100, 10/100/1000, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1, T3/E3, OC-3 and OC-12 technologies, the iConverter family is ideal for Enterprise and Broadband Metro networks where copper-to-fiber and fiber-to-fiber conversions are required. iConverter products are used by major enterprises and service providers worldwide who depend on the reliability of the iConverter products and the responsiveness and quality of Omnitron’s customer service. Omnitron's products are backed by a lifetime warranty and free 24x7 technical support.

Pricing and Availability

Available now, the iConverter T1/E1 carries a free lifetime warranty and 24/7 technical support. The manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) for the managed iConverter T1/E1 starts at $795. The MSRP for the iConverter 19-unit chassis is $695.
