The Omnitron iConverter RS232 and iConverter RS422/485 managed serial to fiber converters transmit serial protocol over fiber media for industrial, data collection and security applications.

Fiber Media ConverterIrvine, CA., January 3, 2005 -- Omnitron Systems Technology, Inc., the premier manufacturer of fiber optic connectivity products for Enterprise LAN and First-Mile Metropolitan Area Network applications, introduces the iConverter® RS232 and the iConverter RS422/485 serial to fiber converters.

The iConverter RS232 and RS422/485 are managed serial to fiber converters that transmit serial protocol over fiber media for data collection, industrial and security applications.

Fiber transmission extends the serial signals up to 120km, and provides a higher level of signal quality and security than copper cabling.

Fiber transmission extends the serial signals up to 120km, and provides a higher level of signal quality and security than copper cabling. A fiber optic network link is immune to EMI, RFI, cross-talk, ground loops and other electrical problems, greatly enhancing the signal quality in severe environments. Conversely, fiber optic links do not generate EMI or RFI signals that can lead to security breaches like copper cabling. These characteristics make fiber extremely attractive to government agencies with major security concerns.

The iConverter RS232 and RS422/485 are available with single fiber or dual fiber single-mode transceivers, or with dual fiber multimode transceivers. Serial port interfaces are available with either a DB-9 female connector or terminal block connector for field wiring.

The converters carry a full complement of independent control signals and configuration capabilities to provide connectivity between a wide variety of serial devices. The iConverter RS232 supports the RTS, CTS, DCS, DTR and DSR control signals, and the iConverter RS422/485 supports the RTS and CTS control signals. Connection to DTE or DCE devices is configured by an easily accessible DIP-switch on the front panel of the module. This feature eliminates the need to use a null-modem cable when connecting two serial devices of the same type. On the iConverter RS422/485, integrated configurable terminators support the RS-422 and RS-485 operations, allowing the unit to be deployed at any node in the serial line.

The iConverter serial converters automatically detect the signal baud rate of the connected full-duplex serial device, ranging from 110 to 921,600 baud, and automatically adjust to changes in the connected device's baud rate during operation without reconfiguration or interruption of service.

The iConverter RS232 and RS422/485 are members of the modular iConverter product family, and are designed to work in any iConverter chassis. All iConverter modules are hot-swappable and can be mounted in a 19-Module or a 5-Module rack-mountable chassis with any combination of redundant AC and 18-60VDC power supplies. They can also be mounted in a 2-Module AC or 18-60VDC powered chassis or in a 1-Module AC powered chassis. When installed in a multi-module chassis, they can be remotely monitored and managed by software control.

iConverter equipment can be managed with Omnitron's NetOutlook™ SNMP Management Software, any third-party SNMP management software or Telnet. Management is accomplished by installing an iConverter Network Management Module (NMM2) or an iConverter media converter module with integrated management, such as the iConverter 10/100M in the chassis. The management system allows network managers to remotely monitor equipment status, configure parameters and receive a variety of user-specified trap (alarm) notifications. Remote configuration of the iConverter RS232 and iConverter RS422/485 modules enables DTE or DCE selection and Fiber Loop-Back test, and is capable of overriding physical DIP-switch settings. In the event of a power loss, these configuration parameters can be automatically reloaded from the management module, using the "Soft Reload" option. These management capabilities save Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) costs by quickly diagnosing network problems, reducing trips to edge equipment and minimizing user down time.
