New fiber converters enable delivery of data, voice, and video services at a fraction of the cost of conventional VLAN switch equipment.

VLAN Fiber Media ConverterIrvine, CA, May 3, 2004 -- Omnitron Systems Technology, Inc., the premier manufacturer of fiber media converters for First-Mile Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) and Enterprise LAN applications, debuts three new VLAN iConverter managed media converters. The new modules support the IEEE 803.1Q VLAN tagging, the 802.1p Quality of Service (QoS) prioritization and feature port access and bandwidth controls enabling Service Providers to economically deliver data, voice and video over Ethernet in Fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) applications.

The VLAN, QoS and Bandwidth Control features enable Service Providers to tune their service offerings effectively to meet their user's needs.

VLAN multi-tagging provides tunneling of user data within the Service Provider's network and enables delivery of virtual private network data security services. QoS provides data stream prioritizing based on real-time criticality enabling the delivery of voice and video over Ethernet services. Bandwidth control provides a mechanism for tuning the bandwidth allocated to a user enabling the Service Provider to sell different levels of bandwidth based on user needs.

The iConverter 10/100M is a 10/100 UTP copper-to-fiber converter-switch with integrated management. It is available as a stand-alone unit or as a plug-in module, and can operate as a chassis manager or as a regular 10/100 module. With its VLAN, QoS and Bandwidth Control features, the 10/100M is ideal as a standalone Customer Premises (CPE) managed converter or as a chassis manager in data/voice/video services over Ethernet or multi-tenant configurations.

The iConverter 10/100VT is a 10/100 UTP to fiber managed media converter-switch plug-in module. With its VLAN, QoS and Bandwidth Control features, the 10/100VT is ideal as a chassis module in data/voice/video services over Ethernet or multi-tenant configurations.

The iConverter 4TxVT is a 4-port 10/100 managed Ethernet Switch plug-in module. With its VLAN, QoS and per port Bandwidth Control features, the 4TxVT is ideal as a chassis module in data/voice/video services over Ethernet and multi-tenant configurations.

The 10/100M and 10/100VT are available with multimode, single-mode and WDM-based single-fiber options. All the new modules support a frame size of 1536 bytes.

Discussing the product introduction, Steve Mood, Omnitron's VP of Engineering said "This product offering brings a scalable and cost-effective solution that can be used by Service Providers to offer new services at an attractive cost to the users. Until now, VLAN, QoS and bandwidth control were available only in large and expensive equipment. Omnitron's introduction brings the technology to the market at a price point that shortens the ROI payback time and facilitates the deployment of new data, voice and video services where such services were prohibitively expensive before".

Like all iConverter modules, the 10/100M, 10/100VT and 4TxVT modules can be managed. The 10/100M features an integrated management while the 10/100VT and 4TxVT require the presence of a 10/100M Module or a Network Management Module (NMM2) in the same chassis to be managed. Management can be performed in-band or out-of-band via Telnet, via Omnitron's NetOutlook SNMP-based management software or via any third-party SNMP-based software such as HP's OpenViewT. Serial console port and modem access using the serial console port are also available for management access. The management features monitoring of port and module status and statistics, remote configuration of port parameters and trap notification.

"Using network management embedded in the customer's premises equipment, Service Providers can reduce costs associated with trips to remote equipment locations by remotely testing and configuring network parameters" Mood continued, "They can also minimize lost profits associated with Level of Service Agreements by minimizing customer down time by immediately being alerted to network problems and quickly diagnosing them remotely".

All iConverter modules are hot-swappable and can be mounted in a 19-Module or a 5-Module rack-mountable chassis with any combination of redundant AC and 48VDC power supplies, providing a scalable solution that is space efficient and cost effective. They can also be mounted in a 2-Module AC or 48VDC powered chassis or in a 1-Module AC powered chassis.

Featuring NEBS level-3 certification and supporting 10, 100, 10/100, 10/100/1000, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1, T3/E3, OC-3/STM-1 and OC-12/STM-3 technologies, the iConverter family is ideal for Enterprise and Broadband Metro networks where copper-to-fiber and fiber-to-fiber conversions are required. iConverter products are used by major enterprises and Service Providers worldwide who depend on the reliability of the iConverter products and the responsiveness and quality of Omnitron's customer service. Omnitron's products are backed by a lifetime warranty and free 24x7 technical support.
