Fiber-to-the-Desk with PoE/PoE+

In this application example, a fiber-to-the-desk network is deployed to leverage the security, bandwidth and distance benefits of fiber optic cabling.

Fiber is distributed from a copper network switch in a data closet using media converters. iConverter, miConverter or FlexPoint media converters can be installed in high-density rack-mount chassis to provide reliable and cost-effective fiber distribution from existing copper network equipment.

Fiber optic cables run to each office/desk, where they are terminated by OmniConverter media converters that are powered by an AC or DC power source. The media converters provide fiber-to-copper media conversion, plus Power over Ethernet (PoE) via UTP cabling. IP phones and video conferencing equipment powered by PoE are known as Powered Devices (PDs). OmniConverter media converters can power a variety of IEEE compliant and non-IEEE compatible PDs.

In OFFICE 1, the OmniConverter media converter has two RJ-45 ports that provide PoE or PoE+ to an IP Phone and Video Conferencing Equipment. A desktop PC or Thin Client is tethered to the phone and receives data only over the UTP cable.

In OFFICE 2 , the OmniConverter media converter automatically detects whether or not a connected device is a PoE Powered Device (PD), so non-PD devices can also be safely connected directly to the media converters.

OmniConverter media converters also support PoE+ for desktop devices that require up to 34.2W of power.
