A private marina required a reliable, high-performance surveillance network to provide continuous monitoring of docks, boat slips, fuel stations, marina entrances, parking areas, waterfront walkways, and other common areas throughout the property. The security system included IP cameras, PTZ cameras, wireless access points, emergency communication stations, and access control devices distributed across the marina and its remote docks.
Because many surveillance locations were located hundreds or even thousands of feet from the marina’s central network location, traditional copper Ethernet cabling was not practical due to the 100-meter Ethernet distance limitation. The waterfront environment also presented significant challenges, including salt air, humidity, moisture, electrical storms, vibration, temperature variations, and electromagnetic interference from pumps, generators, motors, and other marina equipment.
The marina selected Omnitron RuggedNet® Industrial Managed PoE Switches to create a resilient fiber optic backbone capable of delivering high-speed Ethernet connectivity and Power over Ethernet (PoE) to surveillance and network devices throughout the property.
The Challenge
The marina needed a surveillance infrastructure capable of meeting several operational requirements:
- Connect remote IP cameras located along docks and waterfront areas
- Extend Ethernet connectivity far beyond the 100-meter copper limitation
- Provide reliable PoE power to cameras and wireless access points
- Operate continuously in demanding outdoor waterfront environments
- Support fiber ring redundancy for uninterrupted network operation
- Allow centralized monitoring and management from the marina office or security room
- Minimize maintenance and field service calls
- Easily expand as additional docks, slips, cameras, and security zones are added
Traditional copper cabling would have required additional network cabinets, intermediate switches, and electrical infrastructure throughout the marina. This would increase installation complexity and cost while introducing additional points of failure in exposed waterfront locations.
The Solution
The surveillance network was designed using Omnitron RuggedNet® Industrial Managed PoE Switches installed in weather-protected field cabinets at strategic locations throughout the marina. Fiber optic cabling was used to create a high-speed backbone between the marina office and remote docks, while the RuggedNet switches provided local PoE connections to IP cameras, PTZ cameras, wireless access points, and other Ethernet devices.
Each RuggedNet switch supplies IEEE 802.3af/at/bt PoE directly to:
- Fixed IP security cameras
- PTZ cameras
- Thermal cameras
- Wireless Access Points
- Intercom stations
- Emergency call boxes
- Gate access controllers
Network management is centralized from the marina operations center where operators monitor live video, network status, and device health through the Video Management System (VMS) and SNMP network management software.

The Benefits
Long-Distance Fiber Connectivity
Fiber optic links connect remote docks, piers, and marina facilities over distances far beyond copper Ethernet limitations while maintaining full Gigabit performance.
Reliable Power Delivery
PoE eliminates the need for local electrical outlets by delivering both power and data over a single Ethernet cable.
Network Resiliency
Fiber ring redundancy ensures continuous surveillance even if a fiber cable is accidentally damaged.
Simplified Installation
A single fiber backbone and distributed PoE switches significantly reduce trenching, conduit, and electrical installation costs.
Centralized Management
Network administrators can remotely monitor switch health, PoE status, bandwidth utilization, and camera connectivity from a single location.
Industrial Reliability
RuggedNet switches are engineered for harsh marine environments where moisture, vibration, corrosion, and temperature extremes are common.
To provide an additional layer of protection in the demanding marine environment, the customer selected optional conformal coating for the RuggedNet® Industrial PoE Switches deployed throughout the marina. Conformal coating helps protect internal electronic components from moisture, humidity, condensation, and corrosion. These are conditions commonly encountered near docks and waterfront facilities where salt-laden air can accelerate equipment degradation. Combined with the RuggedNet switches’ industrial-hardened design and wide operating temperature capability, this added protection helps increase long-term reliability and provides greater confidence for continuous operation in exposed, high-humidity marine applications.
The Results
Following deployment, the port realized significant operational improvements:
- 24/7 continuous surveillance coverage across the marina
- Reliable fiber connectivity between remote dock locations
- Reduced network downtime through fiber ring redundancy
- Simplified installation by combining power and data with PoE
- Faster maintenance through remote diagnostics and management
- Easy expansion as additional docks and surveillance devices were added
- Lower long-term operating costs due to reduced maintenance requirements
Improved public safety and asset protection
