The new iConverter GX/TM provides a secure demarcation point to end users, and features VLAN technology, QoS Prioritization and Port Access Control.
Irvine, CA. April 5, 2005 -- Omnitron Systems Technology, Inc., the premier manufacturer of fiber connectivity products for Enterprise and First Mile Metropolitan Network applications, introduces the new iConverter® GX/TM self-managed copper UTP to fiber optic converter. The iConverter GX/TM is a 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet device that can be configured as a standalone, self-managed Network Interface Device (NID) or as chassis plug-in modules that can manage a single unit or an entire chassis of converters.
GX/TM supports Virtual LAN (VLAN) technology, Quality of Service (QoS) prioritization and port access control for a securely managed demarcation point at the network edge/Customer Premises.

VLAN technology allows several virtual networks to coexist on a single physical network, enabling multiple organizations or departments to share network infrastructure resources while maintaining secure and isolated user data. Support of the IEEE 802.1p QoS prioritization enables delivery of high priority, real-time voice and video services over Ethernet.
The iConverter GX/TM supports port access control to enable and disable specific ports. Service Providers can easily control customer access while maintaining port configuration for easy disabling or enabling of service. Enterprise network managers can disable ports when they are not in use to prevent unauthorized access to the network.
All iConverter modules are hot-swappable and can be mounted in a 19-Module or a 5-Module rack-mountable chassis with any combination of redundant AC and 18-60VDC power supplies, providing a scalable solution that is space efficient and cost effective. They can also be mounted in a 2-Module AC or 18-60VDC powered chassis or in a 1-Module AC powered chassis.
The GX/TM can be managed with Omnitron's NetOutlook™ SNMP Management Software, third-party SNMP management software or Telnet. The management system allows network managers to remotely monitor network status, configure equipment parameters and receive a variety of user-specified trap (alarm) notifications. These management capabilities save operating costs by quickly diagnosing network problems, reducing trips to edge equipment and minimizing user down time.

In this application, copper UTP from a Central Office/Network Core Gigabit switch is converted to fiber via a 19-Module rack of iConverter media converters, managed with an iConverter Network Management Module (NMM) and NetOutlook Management Software. The fiber is distributed to three locations, where the fiber is converted back to copper and distributed to end users. End users at each location can be assigned to different VLANs, and all ports are securely managed from a single management station.
At the first location, a standalone GX/TM is providing a secure, self-managed demarcation point to an end user.
At the second location, a GX/TM and an iConverter 4TxVT compact switch module are installed in an iConverter 2-Module chassis. This configuration provides up to five managed 10/100 copper ports to the workgroup.
At the third location, a GX/TM and four 4TxVT compact switch modules are installed in an iConverter 5-Module chassis. This chassis configuration provides up to seventeen managed 10/100 copper ports to a building.
This campus star configuration allows network managers to distribute multiple fiber links from the Central Office/Network Core and drop off copper to single users or workgroups with a compact, cost-effective and secure device that supports VLAN, QoS Prioritization and Port Access Control.
The iConverter family features NEBS level-3 certification and supports 10, 100, 10/100, 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1, T3/E3, OC3/STM1, OC12/STM4 and serial technologies. iConverter products are used worldwide to provide fiber optic access in major Enterprise and Service Provider Broadband Metropolitan networks.
