In this application example, IP cameras are deployed. The application may be security surveillance, traffic monitoring or manufacturing process control. Fiber is used because the required link distances exceed the 100m limitation of UTP cabling.
The network originates from a fiber switch (or it can be a UTP switch and a chassis of copper-to-fiber media converters). A fiber optic cable runs to the first OmniConverter media converter, located near a convenient AC or DC power source. The OmniConverter media converter provides Power over Ethernet (PoE) to one or two IP cameras, each of which can be located up to 100m from the media converter.
OmniConverter media converters also support PoE+ for cameras with heaters/blowers or pan/tilt/zoom motors that require up to 25.5W of power.
OmniConverter media converters are available with two fiber ports, enabling a fiber daisy chain to additional media converters for linear network architectures, as shown in the illustration below.
For outdoor environments, OmniConverter media converters support wide operating temperature range (-40 to 60C) or extended operating temperature range (-40 to 75C).
