The iConverter HybridNID™ is a Network Interface Device that enables the delivery of carrier-grade Ethernet services across multiple-operator networks with value-added revenue from independent SLA verification.

With the iConverter HybridNID installed at the customer premises or cell tower, both a Service Provider and Wholesale Operator partner can independently provision, manage and monitor the Ethernet service.

The iConverter HybridNID clearly defines the service responsibilities between the Service Provider and the Wholesale Operator. The Wholesale Operator owns, installs, manages and maintains the iConverter HybridNID, which is part of the Wholesale Operator’s transparent Ethernet service that is leased by the Service Provider. The Service Provider also has management access to provision the service attributes. Both the Wholesale Operator and Service Provider can monitor Service OAM functions.

The iConverter HybridNID features dual management entities with secure and independent management access for the Wholesale Operator and the Service Provider. Wholesale Operator management is accessed from the Network Operations Center (NOC) via the Operator’s network. Service Provider management is accessed through the Operator’s network using the management CE-VID.

This unified demarcation simplifies service maintenance at out-of-franchise customer locations. The Wholesale Operator can focus on providing transparent Ethernet service and the hardware logistics, without worrying about the details of subscriber service attributes. The Service Provider can focus on providing end-to-end Ethernet service and SLA enforcement, without having to address remote sparing and truck roll logistics.

The iConverter HybridNID can be remotely managed through TELNET, SNMPv1/v2c/v3 and IP-less 802.3ah OAM extensions. SNMP management is accessed via Omnitron’s NetOutlook® Network Management software.

Physical port interfaces include 100BASE-FX and 1000BASE-X Small Form Pluggable Transceivers for standard or CWDM wavelengths. Management interface ports and Customer facing service ports are available in copper RJ-45 or SFP fiber interfaces.

End-to-End Service OAM

The HybridNID supports IEEE 802.1ag Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) and ITU-T Y.1731 Performance Monitoring Service OAM (SOAM) standards. Service OAM provides the capability to monitor key Service Level Agreement (SLA) parameters including frame delay, frame delay variation, frame loss and availability. These OAM features provide the efficient detection and rapid isolation of potential service problems enabling SLA assurance while reducing Operational costs (OPEX).

Rapid Service Activation

The HybridNID supports zero-touch and one-touch provisioning to reduce the time required to install equipment at the Customer Premises and activate service. Pre-configured service parameter templates can be automatically uploaded to the HybridNID after hardware installation. This enables a technician to quickly install a HybridNID by connecting cables and turning on power without having to configure the HybridNID on site. LEDs display that the HybridNID is provisioned and service is turned up.

The HybridNID can validate the provisioned service, by sending RFC 2544 test traffic through the provisioned service on a per flow basis. The test captures key performance indicators for SLA, including throughput, delay, delay variation and frame loss.

Equipment Interoperability

The HybridNID is fully compliant to ITU-T and IEEE Service OAM standards. This comprehensive standards conformance ensures fault detection and performance monitoring interoperability with third-party Ethernet equipment vendors.

Business Case

Conventional NIDs are a challenge when Service Providers deliver services outside of their network (off-net), and must partner with Wholesale Operators to provide Ethernet business services or mobile backhaul.

Omnitron’s iConverter HybridNID provides a single platform that delivers the Ethernet service via one User Network Interface and enables both the Service Provider and the Wholesale Operator to manage and monitor the Ethernet service.

Generate Value Added Revenue

  • Provide Ethernet services with end-to-end SLA assurance
  • Offer HybridNID functionality with secure access to management, provisioning and performance monitoring
