Fiber to the Target – Digital Training Range

The example above demonstrates Fiber-to-the-Target applications in a Digital Training Range.

From the fiber switch in the Control Tower shown in the upper left of the illustration, 100Mbps dual or single-fiber is linked to a standalone FlexPoint 10/100 unmanaged media converter installed in a NEMA enclosure at Target Range A for weather-proof durability in harsh temperature environments. The FlexPoint 10/100 enables fiber connectivity to UTP based target sensors.

The fiber switch also links to an iConverter 2-Module Chassis at Target Range B, where the fiber link connects to an iConverter fiber-to-fiber module installed in the chassis. The data travels across the Ethernet backplane of the chassis to a iConverter 4Tx four-port switch module. This configuration provides a fiber uplink port, a fiber downlink port and four 10/100 copper ports for UTP connectivity to target sensors.

The fiber downlink from Target Range B is daisy-chained to a 1-Module Chassis with an iConverter 10/100 media converter module installed in the chassis at Target Range C. The data travels across the Ethernet backplane of the chassis to the two optional UTP ports built into the chassis. This configuration provides a fiber uplink port and three 10/100 copper ports for UTP connectivity to target sensors.

A variety of iConverter fiber-to-fiber and UTP switch modules can be used in this application, which can be managed or unmanaged. The variety of modules and compact chassis in the iConverter product family enable high density UTP port configurations required for this solution.

The FlexPoint unmanaged media converters and the iConverter manageable media converters in this application support standard and wide temperature ranges for outdoor environments.
